New Look

Figured it was time to redecorate around here again. Going for a slightly more serious, dignified look this time around. I think this is version 3.0. Come in, relax, make yourself at home. Don't put your feet on the coffee table, though, please.

Ultrabook

I try to leave as small and shallow a footprint as possible. I have a vehicle, but it lives its life as a driveway ornament; 13 years after I bought it, it still has under 34,000 miles on the clock. I walk and take mass transit whenever possible. I don't eat meat. I recycle. I avoid plastic packaging and bags as much as I can.

But there are two areas in which I fail dismally. I fly way too much - I'm already at close to 50,000 miles for the year. And my consumption of electronic goods is appalling. In particular, I just rip through laptops: for reasons that are unclear to me, perhaps because I simply beat the holy snot out of them, my laptops tend to last, on average, maybe two years.

Now I am setting up my latest. This time I am going the Ultrabook route. I am hoping it lasts at least through 2014. Read More

Alaska, again

Loni and JoeDog watching the local wildlife out the living room window ...

Back in Alexandria after another spell in Alaska. Not the cheapest thing in the world, flying to the 49th state and back all the time. But in a way, it's priceless.

Olympics

I rarely yearn for the homeland or wish that I were there. I haven't returned since the death of my mother almost two years ago, and I find it hard to imagine the circumstance in which I might - other, of course, than a desire to visit my brother. I must admit, though, that I thought differently this past weekend, and likely will be thinking differently over the next couple of weeks. The Olympics opening ceremony was sensational, the public excitement - after weeks and months of the kind of classically British moaning that helps keep me away - was palpable, and the games themselves, doping issues aside, promise to bring that unmatchable quadrennial excitement. Read More

Cabin on a Cliff

I'm looking forward to taking a break next month. It's my girlfriend's birthday so we're getting away for a while. This is where we'll be going. I am, to put it mildly, psyched.

More HBO

I'm back in Las Vegas, covering Saturday's fight between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley. And as part of my new gig, working all week for HBO.com, I am the 'talent' - if ever a word was less appropriate - for these great video packages. I greatly enjoy doing these; and, thanks to people far more deserving of the t-word than me, they look fantastic.

Tombstone II

I recently returned to Tombstone, on the second of two research trips for my upcoming Washington Post Magazine article. Always one to immerse myself in the story, I indulged my youthful inner cowboy, and made an appearance as an extra in one of the Wyatt Earp Days skits on Allen Street. Many thanks to the Tombstone Vigilantes for being so wonderful and welcoming. Read More

I Feel Love ...

It is said that smell, more than any other sense, has the power to transport one to a time and a place previously experienced. It's a sensation we've all experienced. Music, too, is an extremely strong reminder, particularly music we associate with times of great happiness or grief. When I think of "I Feel Love", I am immediately transported back to the summer of 1977 and a blissfully happy childhood. I think of sunny days, of the Silver Jubilee, of playing in the garden with our dog, of watching and admiring my brothers who seemed so very old and mature but were in fact 21 and 20. It is a timeless classic, and in memory of Donna Summer, who died today at the tragically young age of 63, I shall be playing it often.

gaudete

I loved this song when I was a young lad. Just found this version online and was happy to hear their voices sound as strong and harmonious as they did 30 years earlier.
